Cape Town - A fire that destroyed two homes in Betty's Bay, Western Cape, was extinguished on Thursday morning, the Overberg district disaster management centre said.

“The fire started last night (Wednesday) at 7.20pm in Betty's Bay and was fanned by gale force and a north-westerly wind,” chief fire officer Reinhard Geldenhuys said.

“Other fire departments responded and asked for assistance. We had 26 fire vehicles on the scene trying to protect houses in the total chaos.”

Geldenhuys said two houses burnt to the ground. There were no serious injuries.

The fire was put out before sunrise on Thursday morning.

“Most of the [fire] units were sent back but we are keeping two units on site to monitor the situation,” he said.

The cause of the fire has not been determined yet but will be investigated. - Sapa
