Cape Town has a new name, but this one probably won’t be on the tip of everyone’s tongue.
//Hui !Gaeb, a Khoisan name meaning “where the clouds gather”, is soon to be emblazoned across a billboard in the city centre.
And fast food group Nando’s will be footing the bill.
The name was revealed by the Khoisan community as they gathered over the weekend to pay their respects to traditional leader and healer Oom Dawid Kruiper, who died in an Upington hospital earlier this month.
Tania Kleinhans, of the Institute for the Restoration of the Aborigines of SA, said the name was something |which people from any race group or nation could identify with.
After the name was proposed she approached Nando’s to sponsor the billboard.
She said the board, which will include a translation, would be going up in front of the Castle on Thursday.
Kleinhans said she had chosen to approach Nando’s because of their controversial television advert which had been released earlier this month.
The advertisement begins with the voice-over: “You know what's wrong with South Africa? It's all you foreigners.”
It then shows people of various races and cultures across the country disappearing in puffs of smoke.
Eventually, only a Khoisan man is left, and he declares he is not going anywhere: “You (at)&*$# (swearword blocked out in advertisement ) found us here.”
SABC had refused to air the advert. The advert had been intended to promote diversity and anti-xenophobia but SABC felt it had done exactly the opposite. – Cape Times, Sapa
