Cape Town - The owner of football club Chippa United is devastated after his baby son drowned.

It is believed 20-month-old Zenande Mpengesi died after falling into the family pool on Saturday.

The youngest child of Siviwe “Chippa” Mpengesi could not be revived and died at his family’s Tygervalley home.

Amid the tragedy of his son’s death, Mpengesi’s club reached new heights by beating Premier Soccer League giants Orlando Pirates 1-0 in Port Elizabeth.

But the heartbroken dad of four was not there to witness it.

He was on a plane back to Cape Town after he received the news while his team played on for their grieving coach.

On Sunday, church members of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God assembled at Mpengesi’s house to share their condolences and mourn with Chippa.

Spokesperson for the family, Abongile Mnyanda, said they are still puzzled and distraught at the incident.

“According to the child-minder, the little boy was playing with other kids, he then walked out.

“Then his elder siblings rushed out and found the child drowning.

“With the help of the nanny, they then called for assistance from neighbours.

“Paramedics also came to the scene to resuscitate but without luck.

“We are very saddened. Chippa couldn’t even watch the game. He flew back before the game started.

“The family is still puzzled and shocked about what happened.

“It’s not known how the child landed into the water because the pool is fenced off,” Mnyanda said.

Police say an inquest docket has been opened for investigation.

Meanwhile, scores of people took to Twitter to express their sadness.

Democratic Alliance MP Masizole Mnqasela said he was on his way to visit his friend “after his tragic loss”.

He tweeted: “I just spoke to Simon Mpengesi Chairman of Chippa United about his loss of a beloved son. He is devastated. Let’s keep him in prayers.”

@IamBlackChild tweeted: Chippa Mpengesi’s 20-month-old son has passed away. May his soul rest in peace.”

And @1YANGAwakening wrote: “Bitter sweet day for Simon ‘Chippa’ Mpengesi. To down the mighty Buccaneers on the same day your baby dies. My heart goes out to his family.”
