Johannesburg - Western Cape police have denied allegations that police attacked marching workers in Nduli and Prince Alfred Hamlet, near Ceres, on Tuesday morning.
“The allegations made in this regard are not true. Police took action against protesting farm workers by using rubber bullets to disperse the crowds,” said Lt-Col Andrè Traut in an e-mail.
“No one was attacked and no damage to any of our vehicles has been reported.”
In a statement, the Workers International Vanguard Party alleged that police attacked marchers, who in turn retaliated by burning police vehicles.
Traut said the situation in the area was being monitored and police officers were deployed to maintain law and order.
Workers in the De Doorns area have been protesting since last Monday about their working conditions and pay.
