Cape Town - A Saturday night out turned into tragedy when a young Cape couple were hit by a train as they headed to an evening function.

Metrorail spokeswoman Riana Scott said the deaths occurred at a farm crossing between Vlottenberg and Stellenbosch while the couple were en route to the farm.

“The train driver suffered from shock and has been sent for medical assessment.

The 11 passengers on board were transported by bus to Bellville,” Scott said.

The crossing is either near to, or the same site, where Dr Henry Wiggins died on his way to his best friend, former Springbok great Dawie Snyman.

The victims were identified as first-year Maties students Christiaan Schultz of Somerset West and Lezaan van Niekerk of Springbok.
