Cape Town - Employees of a Siyaya Debt Solutions franchise in Bellville have been promised payment of all the money they were owed after they had gone without pay for two months.
One worker, Carmelita Cloete, said 25 employees had been fighting for the past week to get their payment, or at least an explanation why they had not been paid.
The group had been on their way to the Department of Labour on Tuesday morning to lodge a complaint, but then received a call from the “big bosses” of Siyaya Debt Solutions, Cloete said.
They were given new contracts of employment, the promise of two weeks’ training starting from Monday, and an undertaking that all the money they were owed would be paid.
Cloete, who spoke on behalf of the group, said while they were happy with the news, “we’re only going to see when our phone goes off telling us there’s money in the account”.
Robert Daniels, a management representative for Siyaya Debt Solutions, which offers debt counselling or debt review, said the 25 employees were employed by a Nadhir Pillay of Siyaya Bellville, a franchise of Siyaya Debt Solutions across the road.
“The situation was brought to the attention of the directors of Siyaya Debt Solutions, who informed Mr Pillay’s staff that they would meet them to resolve their employment fears on their return from their business trip to London,” said Daniels.
They had returned on Tuesday morning.
“As a show of good faith, Siyaya Debt Solutions have agreed not only to employ all 25 of Mr Pillay’s staff members, but to update their backpay and current cycle salaries that Mr Pillay was unable to provide.”
