Disaster management teams were on standby in Cape Town on Saturday as the city experienced heavy rain, an official said.

Emergency workers had been deployed to 12 areas that had been hardest hit, said Disaster Risk Management spokesman Wilfred Solomons-Johannes.

“Officials have given sand bags to locals to prevent their houses from flooding.”

The centre had also advised motorists to exercise extra caution on the wet roads.

“The heavy rains and strong north-westerly winds reaching gale force in certain places are affecting the free-flow of traffic on roadways,” said Solomons-Johannes.

It had been raining in Cape Town since Friday.

The SA Weather Service said it expected the rain to continue throughout Saturday and could possibly clear on Sunday. - Sapa
