Cape Town - Protesters from UCT, CPUT, NEHAWU and other action groups broke through the gates of Parliament during the finance minister’s medium-term budget speech.

The speech had already been delayed by EFF MPs who chanted "Fees must fall" as Nhlanhla Nene tried to speak. The MPs were subsequently evicted from the chamber by parliamentary security staff.

Shouts of "Blade must go!" echoed through the parliamentary precinct as a protest over tuition fee increases at tertiary institutions, which started at Wits but has since spread across SA, rocked the seat of government.

The small number of police officers there met the marchers with stun grenades and tazers.

Chaos ensued.
