Cape Town -

A head-on collision on Sir Lowry’s Pass killed a family of three, including a six-year-old boy.

Provincial traffic chief Kenny Africa said the incident happened shortly after midday.

One of the cars was heading to Cape Town while another two were driving up the pass. One of these tried to overtake the one in front, and hit the car heading towards the city.

“The car overturned and landed on its roof. The boy went through the windscreen and landed in front of another car.”

He died instantly.

The boy’s parents died on the scene while another motorist was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Two other people were taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

Africa said the parents were in their forties and thirties.

Police spokesman Colonel-Lieutenant Andre Traut said the cars were a white Toyota Corolla, white Toyota Tazz and Silver VW Polo.

A culpable homicide docket has been opened.
