Cape Town - A man died after he collapsed aboard a Cape Town fishing vessel early on Monday, the National Sea Rescue Institute said.

The vessel was heading for Port Elizabeth at the time.

Port Elizabeth deputy station commander Justin Erasmus said that shortly before 1am, the NSRI received reports that a 50-year-old fisherman had collapsed and fallen unconscious aboard the vessel.

Upon arriving on board, the city's emergency services personnel, who went out with the rescue crew, declared the man dead.

“While a heart attack is suspected to be the cause of death, police will investigate as is standard procedure in a case such as this.”

The man's body was brought to shore and handed over to police and forensic pathology services.

“Condolences are conveyed to family of the deceased man,” Erasmus said.
