Cape Town - A fisherman caught a badly decomposed body on his hook and line at the Nine Miles beach near Strandfontein in Cape Town on Sunday, said rescue workers.

Spokesman for the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Craig Lambinon said the fisherman managed to haul the body to the beach and raised the alarm.

“The NSRI and police responded and the body was handed into the care of the forensic pathology services,” he said.

“Police are investigating if this discovery may be related to drownings that have occurred in the False Bay area over the past few months.”

Lambinon said the condition of the body suggested that the person had died some time ago.

Although forensics were yet to confirm the gender of the deceased, Lambinon said he suspected it could have been a man. - Sapa
