Cape Town - Four Hout Bay fishermen have been rescued by the NSRI after their boat capsized.

Tom Coetzee, NSRI Kommetjie station commander, said they responded to distress flares sent up by the men and found them clinging to the upturned hull of the fishing boat, Siyazama Project 2, just off Kommetjie beach.

The fishermen were between 30 and 40 years old.

Rescue swimmers brought the fishermen to the rescue boat.

The men were suffering from mild hypothermia, but were otherwise uninjured. They were treated by paramedics. Attempts to right the capsized boat proved unsuccessful, and it was towed to shallow waters where relatives of the crew arranged for it to be recovered.

Coetzee said the it was believed the boat may have been capsized by a wave.

“Once righted, a hole was discovered in the hull, suggesting it may have hit a reef or an object before or after it capsized,” he said.
