Cape Town -

A Johannesburg family’s road trip to Port Elizabeth for a reunion with relatives ended in grief when four of them were killed when their vehicle collided with another.

Amina Abader, her son Mukhtaar, daughter Rabia and grandchild Amani were all killed in the collision near Ventersburg in the Free State on Monday. The driver of the other vehicle was killed while four other people were injured.

Abader’s husband Faiek Abader was the only surviving member of the family that travelled on Monday.

Abader’s son Mujahid said his father had been airlifted to hospital in the Free State.

“My uncle went to hospital to see him today and he is a bad condition,” he said.

He added that his family had been on its way to Port Elizabeth for a family reunion this weekend.

Mujahid said information they received was that the driver of the other vehicle had allegedly tried to overtake another vehicle.

Collisions and crashes on the country’s roads over the Easter weekend had claimed 103 lives, the Road Traffic Management Corporation said. Eight of those fatalities were in the Western Cape. The corporation said there had been at least 80 serious crashes across the country since Thursday.

Transport Minister Dipuo Peters is expected to announce the official Easter road death toll figures next week.

Western Cape traffic chief Kenny Africa said one person died after a minibus taxi transporting 18 passengers crashed on the N2 near Wilderness early yesterday morning.

He also said a nine-year-old school girl died after being hit by a truck on the road between Robertson and Bonnievale.

On Monday a child and an adult died and two people were critically injured when a minibus taxi and two other vehicles collided on the N1 near Touws River.

Four people were less seriously injured and taken to hospital in Worcester.

On the same day two women died after three vehicles collided in Touws River.

On Friday morning in Beaufort West, a 46-year-old passenger died after a vehicle went out of control.
