A Congolese car guard, who is also a qualified maths teacher, has been given an assistant teacher's post at the Sunward Park High School in Paarl, in the Western Cape, according to a report on Thursday.
Fernando Brice Olivier Ogadi, 35, left the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2004 to escape political upheaval and came to South Africa.
Ogadi, a passionate maths teacher, worked as a car guard in the parking lot of the Zomerlust Spar in Paarl, Beeld newspaper reported.
He put up a rudimentary blackboard and would enthusiastically explain mathematical equations to any shoppers who cared to listen.
“If somebody is so passionate about something that he's prepared to leave his country for it, he deserves to be helped,” said Sunward Park headmistress Ansie Peens.
“Not everybody has the ability to explain maths, but his method is quite unique,” she said.
Ogadi started his new job on Monday morning, and has been given accommodation in the boarding school, where he offers extra classes and tuition in the afternoons. – Sapa

Congratulations to my brother Mr. Ogadi. I hope such employment gestures will also be extended to the countless other equally and sometimes highly qualified South Africans whose attempts to attract employment have yielded deafening silence from potential but unwilling employers, because the latter worry that as South Africans, they know their rights better and cannot be abused and exploited lying down. Oh Heavenly God, May You please help the unemployed South Africans and may you change the minds of their unconcerned, uninterested and hateful potential employers to regard them and their families with seriousness, compassion, sympathy and empathy – for they also deserve better! So that they may not detest why they ever went to study after all if they would be begging for food and other basic amenities of life with qualifications in their rice carry bags!

BRILLIANT STORY! And to any xenophobes who say that the jobs are stolen from ‘real’ South Africans, please take the time to read the IOL article about KZN teachers threatening to strike AGAIN (Striking teachers are “deplorable” - February 9 2012 at 08:11am), and THEN tell me that this isn’t a good news story! If South African teachers don’t want to work; then I’m all for the hiring of educated, hard-working foreigners who DO want to work and educate our children! Well done to Fernando, and Sunward Park - we salute you.

People should do themselves a favour and engage in conversation the 'foreign' Africans working for scraps here as car guards, fleamarket peddlers, petrol attendants and waiters. I make a habit of asking them about their backgrounds, families, and their goals in SA. By doing so I have met an agricultural economist, an English and French Teacher and 2 remarkable brothers from Ivory Coast, one a GP and the other a medical specialist..the latter bumped into me years later and remembered our previous interaction and related that he is now a university lecturer here. We need these African brothers and sisters of ours with their talents and aspirations to help build our society.
