Cape Town - Celebrities and socialites dressed in haute couture mingled in the sweltering heat while punters played the horses at the country’s biggest horse racing event, the J&B Met.

Held at Kenilworth Racecourse on Saturday, the Met drew a crowd of about 50 000 people, including actress Boity Thulo, TV presenter Lalla Hirayama, actress Bonnie Mbuli and TV and radio presenter Jen Su.

Thulo created a stir when she showed off her much-talked-about assets. She arrived without a date, saying her boyfriend, rapper Cassper Nyovest, “does not do events like these unless he has to perform”.

The general access village was a playground of food, drinks and music, with DJs and performances by Jimmy Nevis and Crazy White Boy.

While a DJ played from a central stage, people took selfies and tweeted them with the hashtag #RareBlend, this year’s theme. Designers outdid themselves, creating looks with featured combinations of metal, leather with glitter and psychedelic imagery to create unique outfits.

Hirayama wore a dress designed by David Tlale and Mbuli wore white shorts with tuxedo top. “I just wanted to look good, be cool and white was the only colour I could think of,” said Mbuli.

The winners of the most elegant couple competition were Jochen Schmidt von Wühlisch and Jehan Bhikoo.

“We are very happy to have won it, I didn’t believe it when they called my number,” said Bhikoo.

Tickets to the VIP marquee allowed guests to rub shoulders with the three faces of the J&B Met, TV presenter Nandi Mngoma, singer Tamara Dey and TV personality and socialite Khanyi Mbau.

Smart Call galloped to the finish to win the main race and the prize of R2.5 million.
