Teaching disruptions continued on Tuesday at the Umyezo Wama Apile combined school in Grabouw, the Western Cape education department said.
“The majority of educators pitched up for teaching but most learners stayed away,” said Bronagh Casey, spokeswoman for education MEC Donald Grant.
She said this was likely because of the influence of the Elgin Grabouw Civic Organisation, which was accused of storming classrooms at the school on Monday.
It apparently told pupils that teaching would not take place as Grant had not responded to a memorandum in which the group demanded new classrooms be built. Grant said he did respond to the memorandum.
Last week, residents barged into the school in Grabouw to demand the building of a new school. Some facilities were set alight and a few people were arrested for public violence.
Casey said schooling was also disrupted in Villiersdorp following a service delivery protest on Monday. A community hall was torched and many facilities were damaged. - Sapa
