Cape Town - Four new CCTV cameras were installed in Hout Bay to add to existing security measures, the City of Cape Town announced on Monday.

“CCTV footage has already proven its worth in the fight against crime as it helps law enforcement agencies to respond immediately to incidents,” said JP Smith, the city’s mayoral committee members for safety and security.

“It also assists with mapping crime hot spots, which can then influence deployment patterns – thus assisting in gathering crime intelligence as well as planning.”

According to Smith, the devices went live in August and came at a cost of R700 000 which was sourced from ward allocation funding in the 2015/2016 financial year.

The cameras are located at the Mariner’s Wharf parking area, the Harbour and Princess Circle, the Beach Club, and Beach Crescent.

“The existing CCTV infrastructure in Hout Bay made it relatively easy to get the signal to one point because of proximity and there being no obstructions around the ocean line. Getting the signals back to the City’s CCTV centres, however, was a challenge but our officials managed to successfully relay the images back to our surveillance centres,” Smith said.
