Cape Town - Doctors have given the go-ahead to start the next phase of Junaid Arendse’s specialist cancer treatment.

The little boy has done well in the trial phase of the topotecan treatment, and the second phase will begin next week.

Doctors at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital on Thursday said the five-year-old was taking well to medication he had taken since the weekend and experienced few side effects. They have given the go-ahead to begin his next dose on July 9.

On Thursday mayor Patricia de Lille also met the little boy and donated R25 000 to the family. Thanks to donations from generous Cape Times readers, friends, supporters, his school, Hazeldene Primary, and four of the country’s top comedians, R150 000 has been raised for his treatment.

His uncle, Jacques le Sueur said: “So far, so good. It’s going to be slow progress… but they are happy for now.” He said Junaid was “over the moon” at meeting De Lille and that Health MEC Nomafrench Mbombo had also contacted the family.
