Johannesburg - There will be a power outage for a “short duration” on Sunday as Koeberg Unit 1 is shut down, Eskom said on Wednesday.

Koeberg Unit 1 would be shut down because defective fuel had to be “found and replaced”, said Eskom's media desk.

“Koeberg Unit 1 is experiencing higher than normal levels of radioactivity in its primary coolant circuit as a result of one or more defective fuel rods in the reactor.”

The short duration outages will last for approximately one month.

Eskom said there was no safety risk to the staff or the public arising from these higher than normal radioactivity levels. - Sapa
