Johannesburg – A light aircraft made an emergency landing on Kogel Bay Resort Beach on Thursday afternoon, but rescuers said when they arrived the pilot and his passenger had already left to seek medical assistance for minor injuries.
"On arrival on the scene the SA Police Services were in attendance at a light aircraft that is believed to have been flying out of a Stellenbosch airfield that was on the beach between the high water and low water mark," said the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) in a press release on Friday.
The 54-year-old South African pilot and a 50-year-old American passenger from California had already left the scene when NSRI arrived.
NSRI and Police were joined on the scene by GB Med Security ambulance services and Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services.
At the request of Stellenbosch airfield officials, who were on the scene, the aircraft was pulled above the high water mark.
Civil Aviation Authority officials are investigating.
