The National Council of SPCAs is investigating an incident in which a dog was hanged, after photographs of the incident were e-mailed to inspectors several hours after a witness saw the animal.
On Wednesday, spokeswoman Christine Kuch said it had been alerted about a live dog hanging from a gate support wire in a small town in the Eastern Cape.
The incident was reported at 3.15pm after the witness took a picture at 11.30am on Tuesday and sent it to the council.
“The incident was witnessed. The individual, who saw what was happening, did nothing at the time,” Kuch said.
“The photographs and directions from Lady Frere to the village were sent to us.”
She added that the witness was 17km from the nearest police station in Cala, but did not report the matter.
Kuch said the horrific incident had “shocked the council to the core”.
