Want to live in a prime location with unlimited sushi and sunset views? Are you prepared to cough up R2 million? Then how about lodging at Clifton's newest upmarket residential location.

For the generous fee, one would enjoy unlimited supplies of sushi, referring to the 40 tons of tuna on board the vessel, according to an advert on Gumtree. The offer included 28 stay-at-home sushi chefs.

But it was a spoof on the Eihatsu Maru which ran aground on Clifton first beach on Saturday morning.

The advert read: “Set sail for warmer seas with this prime luxury construction a stone’s throw from Clifton 1st Beach. Enjoy panoramic views of the Atlantic vista on its 50sqm deck which provides an entertainment area of international standards. You will be the envy of the neighbourhood with the rustic open plan kitchen boasting a capacity to cater for up to forty guests.”

Ali Broadhurst, who usually pulls pranks on his friends, was flabbergasted when he got calls from people offering to buy the vessel. His friends, Ben Rycroft and Simon Woolf had placed the ad and listed him as a contact.

Broadhurst, a medical student at UCT, said he received about 25 calls on Monday, including from a person claiming to be a lawyer threatening court action against him. “They told me they would do this, but I didn’t think they would go ahead with it,” he said.

“One serious man had already made an offer. I thought maybe he was joking, but later realised I was serious when he tried to negotiate a discount.”

The ad was a hit on Twitter, with users finding the post amusing. @Nick_Frost said : “The person who posted this ad on Gumtree wins at life”

@WendyTayler :”Crying with laughter as @Louis_JvR prank calls the number on the clifton ad. He said he was from the complaints board” while @MichaelMoss_101 Hilarious sale of Clifton Wreck on Gumtree.

On Monday night 5 470 people had visited the ad page. - Cape Times
