Cape Town - Cape Town has won the bid to host next year’s Mr Gay World Competition.

This was announced after this year’s finale , which was held in the UK last month.

Thirty-two men from around the world gathered to compete for the coveted title of becoming a “global gay role model”, said the organisers on their website.

This year the event took place in England and Brit Stuart Hatton emerged as the victor.

He became the first UK contestant to win the title since the competition was launched as a non-profit venture in 2008.

As well as modelling challenges, Hatton was made to take part in the “hardest job interview in the world” and tested on global lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) rights issues.

Even though 32 contestants were invited, only 26 took part. The others were banned from competing after their countries refused to issue them visas.

Whether this will be the case in Cape Town remains to be seen.

The bid to bring the competition to South Africa was spearheaded by the Pink Loerie Mardi Gras and Arts Festival in Knysna, an annual celebration of LGBTI culture.

The competition starts on May 3.
