Cape Town - A man died following a three vehicle pile-up on Helen Suzman Boulevard in Cape Town on Thursday, the ER24 paramedic service said.

It was not clear whether the man, believed to be in his fifties, died because of the accident or because of medical complications prior to the crash.

“It is understood that traffic officials who attended to the incident found the man in a light delivery vehicle that was involved in the collision. His vital signs had deteriorated. They tried to assist by initiating CPR,” the paramedic service said a statement.

“Upon arrival at the scene, ER24 paramedics took over CPR. Sadly there was nothing that could be done for the man. He was declared dead.”

The cause of the crash was not known but police were on the scene to investigate.

“It is suspected that the man may have died following a medical-related condition. An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.”

The other drivers involved in the collision refused medical treatment.
