Cape Town - A man is missing after being swept off the Sea Point promenade on Thursday, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

The NSRI were contacted around 5.15pm with unconfirmed reports stating a man had been swept into the sea, said spokesman Craig Lambinon.

The NSRI dispatched a boat and police on the scene confirmed the reports of a man being swept off rocks near the Three Anchor Bay slipway.

However, there were no signs of the eye witnesses and no eye witnesses could be reached by phone.

Nor was it known where the man went into the sea or what had happened.

“Later, while police and NSRI Table Bay rescuers continued to scour the area for signs of the incident, eye witnesses and a female claiming to be the wife 1/8of the man 3/8 appeared,” he said.

They confirmed that earlier a man had been sitting on the sea side of the promenade railing when he fell into the water and was swept out to sea before disappearing.

“It appears that they had gone to seek help when police had arrived on the scene,” said Lambinon.

“A police dive unit and Sea Point police are continuing a search. No sign of the man has yet been found and police have opened an investigation into the incident.”
