It’s hard to believe but a family whose vehicle was crushed in a horror crash all walked away from the wreck without a scratch.
And witnesses say it is because the family landed safely on a mattress after being flung through the air.
A shocked motorist says he thought “people were falling from the sky” after the horror crash on Saturday morning.
The Zimbabwean nationals were on their way home when a bakkie they were travelling in was hit by another vehicle on the N1 near Bellville.
Police at the scene say the driver of one of the vehicles lost control and skidded on the road before colliding with the bakkie and another car.
And now the family believe the mattress they were sleeping on for the long journey home saved their lives.

A 35-year-old motorist who was driving to Kraaifontein tells the Daily Voice that he saw a car screeching to a stop.
Then he saw the occupants of the bakkie “flying out”.
“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” says the shocked man.
“I thought I was seeing people from space.
“But the people flew out and landed nicely on the tarmac and none of them got injured because they were lying on top of a mattress.”
Bellville cops say the cause of the incident is being investigated. - Daily Voice

Next thing you know, apart from seatbelts, it will become compulsory to have mattresses in our vehicles :)

And I thought driving whilst not wearing seat-belts was illegal! LOL. I always cringed when I see loads of workers on bakkies whilst exceeding the limit allowed inside the car version of the bakkie, which from my naive count should be 4 max plus the driver. Surely a simple puncture means fatality. Am I the only one who thinks like this? I know. I'm weird! Eish! The police have got their work cut-out for them. And don't get me started on missing rear number plates.
