Cape Town - A proposal for several Cape Town street name changes has been finalised and sent to mayor Patricia de Lille, the City said on Wednesday.
“In an extensive public participation process earlier this year, the public was asked to comment on the proposed renaming of 24
streets, two civic centres and a footbridge,” the City of Cape Town said in a statement.
“This is part of the City's commitment to building an inclusive city based on a policy of redress, that recognises and celebrates the true diversity of our collective heritage.”
Some of the name changes included: Coen Steytler Avenue to Walter Sisulu Avenue, Modderdam Road to Robert Sobukwe Road, NY1 to Steve Biko Road and Vanguard Drive to Dullah Omar Drive.
It had also been proposed that Wittebome Centre be changed to Wynberg Civic Centre and Athlone Civic Centre to Dulcie September Centre.
The unnamed footbridge between Bonteheuwel and Langa would be named the Bonte-Langa Footbridge.
The City said once De Lille had “applied her mind” the proposed changes would be submitted to the city council for approval.
Ad hoc Naming Committee chairman Brett Herron said: “We have given this input from the public very serious consideration and have listened to the input received.
“As a result, in many instances, we have agreed to leave certain names unchanged.”
He said the committee received about 19 000 comments from the public on the proposed name changes. - Sapa
