Cape Town – The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said on Tuesday that they were still searching for a man who went missing at sea off the Cape West Coast.

NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said the NSRI Mykonos duty crew was dispatched to search for a man who went missing at St Helena Bay, north of Saldanha Bay.

He said that according to reports, three local men from St Helena were returning from an unused fish factory on Sunday April 3 on a small open motor boat, when strong winds swept them out to sea.

Two men, one in his 20s and the other in his 30s, abandoned the boat and swam back to the shore safely, but the third man, aged 48, was still on the boat.

Lambinon said the third man failed to return, and the boat that was carrying him washed up ashore on Tuesday morning without him in it.

“The alarm was raised for the missing man,” he said.

The NSRI Mykonos crew responded and launched a vessel to assist police with their search for the missing man.

“An extensive sea and shoreline search has been conducted covering an extensive area, but no sign of the missing man has been found,” Lambinon said.

Police are providing support to the missing man’s family and a police dive unit would assist local police in their search.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances around the incident.
