Cape Town - A fire that has raged for most of the week in the mountains between Swellendam and Barrydale in the Western Cape has been extinguished, an official said on Saturday.

“We still have a team monitoring it, but the fire is out,” said Overberg fire chief Reinard Geldenhuys.

He said the fire was stifled during Friday night and completely out by Saturday morning.

Geldenhuys said that next week burn scars tracking - to assess fire damage - would be conducted using satellite technology.

The fire originally broke out in the area after a lightning strike on Tuesday night.
