Johannesburg – Police in the Western Cape have arrested several suspects in connection with recent armed robberies in and around Cape Town

In a statement on Monday Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut said a protracted investigation by detectives into the cash in transit and armed robberies has yielded results.

Dubbed "Operation Crackdown" – the weekend swoop on a number of premises led to the arrest of four suspects.

Giving details, Traut said in Malmesbury detectives and Tactical Response Team members arrested a 32-year-old suspect in connection with a robbery at a security company, where a number of firearms were stolen.

In another raid in the same area police picked up two suspects aged 43 and 45 in connection with an Athlone cash in transit robbery that occurred in April 2017.

Police also seized a firearm and arrested a 33-year-old man in Khayelitsha. The man was arrested in connection with a February cash in transit robbery in Harare.

Traut said the 33-year-old will appear in court on Monday for the illegal possession of a firearm.

"Further investigations will determine whether the suspects can be linked to other cases."
