Cape Town - The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service is investigating the cause of a fire at Wynberg Boys’ High School that gutted four classrooms and caused the building’s roof to cave in.

Jessica Shelver, spokeswoman for the Western Cape Education MEC Debbie Schäfer, said the fire started late on Wednesday night and lasted into early Thursday morning.

“The fire started in the administration block, four classrooms have been destroyed in the upper levels and the roof has fallen into the quad,” she said.

The school will remain closed until next Wednesday.

Shelver said pupils could access their school work on the Noodle website.

Fire and Rescue Services spokesman Theo Layne said that his team responded to the fire at 1am.

“The fire was on the second floor of the academic wing of the school. The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this stage,” he said.

A total of 28 firefighters took four hours to douse the flames.

Eight vehicles were called to the scene, including four fire engines, a rescue vehicle, two water tankers and a hydraulic platform.
