School bus overturns near Stellenbosch

Cape Town - A school bus carrying around 50 children overturned on the R44 near Stellenbosch on Tuesday morning leaving two children critically injured and a third in a serious condition.

ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said 31 children were injured when the bus overturned near Welgevonden around 7.15am.

When paramedics arrived on scene, they found two children in a critical condition and one in a serious condition.

One of the critically injured patients, a 14-year-old boy, was found with his hand pinned beneath the bus.

Fire and Rescue Services freed him before he was treated and airlifted to hospital.

Thirteen severely injured pupils were taken to Paarl and Stellenbosch provincial hospitals.

A further 17 children with minor injuries were taken to primary health care facilities in the immediate area.

The exact cause of the incident is still being investigated.
