A sinking fishing boat with five men on board was being towed to the Struisbaai harbour on Saturday morning, the National Sea Rescue Institute said.

“At 9am a fishing vessel with 10 fishermen on board reported it was taking water and sinking 12 nautical miles offshore of Agulhas,” spokesman Craig Lambinon said.

He said on arrival the NSRI found five of the 10 men were already rescued by private boats.

The remaining five were still on the boat but in good condition.

The NSRI was towing the boat and Lambinon said he expected it to reach the harbour before noon.

“All 10 fishermen are safe. It is unknown what caused (the boat) to take on water, but no injuries have been reported,” Lambinon said. - Sapa
