Cape Town - The provincial government has re-advertised its intention to sell the site and buildings which formerly accommodated the Tafelberg Remedial High School in Sea Point, in line with a court order granted this month.

According to the notice, the province plans to sell the erf to the Phyllis Jowell Jewish Day School for R135 million.

This includes an unregistered portion of erf measuring 1 034m² zoned general residential which contains vacant land and buildings, and the remainder of the erf measuring 15 316m², also containing vacant land and buildings.

Interested parties have until June 9 to make written representations to the chief director of immovable asset management regarding the disposal of the land.

The sale of the school buildings was put on hold by an order of court on May 5, after applicants connected to the Reclaim the City movement approached the Western Cape High Court to stop the transfer of sale.

They say the land can be better used to build low-cost housing for workers who work in the inner city.

Reclaim the City said on Thursday: “This process is a major victory for the applicants and supporters of Reclaim the City. It is a step towards bringing black and coloured working-class people back into the city. But Premier Helen Zille still wants to sell the property.”

The movement said it would assist ordinary Capetonians in filing objections to the sale.

They want Zille to personally accept their submissions. She will have to review all new objections received over the next 21 days, with her cabinet.
