The violence displayed during a protest by minibus taxi drivers in Hout Bay, Cape Town, is unacceptable, the provincial legislature said on Thursday.

DA MPL Eugene von Brandis said it was appalling that intimidation was used and guns were fired.

“There is a total disregard for safety, rule of law and the best interest of their clients,” he said.

“The acknowledgement that they 'couldn't control the situation' leaves me cold.”

A pedestrian was critically wounded when he was shot during the protest at the Imizamo Yethu informal settlement on Wednesday.

He walked to the Hout Bay police station and was taken to hospital.

A 51-year-old person was arrested in connection with the shooting.

Drivers from the Imizamo Yethu Sedan Taxi Association refused to operate in protest against drivers operating without permits in their area.

Von Brandis said the law should take its course, regardless of the situation.

“The actions of the taxi associations involved has hurt the taxi industry in the Western Cape in its entirety.” – Sapa
