An 11-year-old pupil has stabbed his Grade 6 teacher with a pen at St Anthony’s Primary School in Heathfield on Tuesday, leaving a gash on her arm requiring stitches.

Education MEC Donald Grant’s spokesperson Bronagh Casey refused to identify the teacher, who was not at school on Wednesday.

“The educator has received counselling.

The department has offered further counselling and support.

“The principal will be referring the matter to the school governing body for a formal disciplinary hearing. The parents will be informed when. The SGB may recommend a sanction. Counselling and support will also be provided,” Casey said.

Tuesday’s attack came two months after the department lost an appeal against a Western Cape High Court ruling in favour of a teacher who had sued it for negligence. - Cape Times
