Cape Town - Eleven people, including a 3-year-old girl, were killed and more than 30 were injured in a bus smash about 25km outside Oudtshoorn early on Thursday morning.

Western Cape traffic officials said the bus, carrying 48 passengers, was travelling from George to Oudtshoorn at about 1.50am when the driver lost control on a dangerous stretch of road known as Perdeskoendraai.

“Ten people died on the scene, while another died in an Oudtshoorn hospital,” traffic chief Kenny Africa said.

Eden district health department spokesman Nadia Ferreira said 36 passengers had been treated at the Oudtshoorn Hospital.

Ten had been discharged and the others were being treated for fractures and lacerations.

Two passengers, including a child with a badly broken arm, were taken to a George hospital.

The driver of the bus survived the crash and was treated for shock.

According to police, a case of manslaughter had been opened.

At about 6.30am, emergency services pulled the bus back on to its wheels. They initially feared people had been trapped under the bus but this was not the case.
