Cape Town - Tons and tons of cereal were destroyed when a Maitland factory caught fire on Sunday morning, the Cape Town disaster risk centre said.

Spokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said about 20 tons of cereal were destroyed in the blaze, which started at 2.30am on Sunday.

“Due to the intensity of the furnace it further rendered the building unsafe to effectively apply fire suppression.”

He said one of the factory walls had cracked because of the excessive heat.

The blaze started on the ground floor and spread to the rest of the building, which housed combustible material, said Solomons-Johannes.

Firefighters and emergency vehicles were on the scene monitoring the situation. - Sapa
