Cape Town - Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu was on Tuesday morning discharged from a Cape Town hospital, where he has been under observation and receiving treatment for a persistent infection.

He will continue his recovery at home.

The infection was a consequence of treatment for prostate cancer that the archbishop has received over the past 18 years. The cancer itself was well under control, his daughter, the Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu said.

The archbishop celebrated Eucharist with her daughter in his ward on Tuesday morning and received a visit from Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi before being discharged.

He shared with Motsoaledi his concern that, while he had enjoyed first-class treatment and the attention of the finest doctors, most South Africans did not have access to decent health care.

Tutu pronounced himself 100 percent behind the proposed introduction of Universal Health Care in South Africa, to be known as National Health Insurance.

The Reverend Canon Tutu once again expressed the family's deep gratitude for the love, concern and prayers of so many people across South Africa and around the world.
