Cape Town - Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu was discharged from hospital on Wednesday morning to continue his convalescence at home, his family said.

The archbishop had a special word of praise for the warmth and compassion of those who work in hospitals, describing them as extraordinary human beings.

Leah Tutu also expressed the family's appreciation to her husband’s doctors, the hospital staff who cared for him, and all who had sent good wishes.

Tutu was readmitted on Saturday after getting an infection as a result of a minor operation last week.

He was a first admitted to hospital at the beginning of this month and spent three days at home before his surgery wound became infected.
