Cape Town - Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille has described ailing Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, who had been readmitted to hospital, as a fighter.

The Tutu family said the Nobel peace prize winner”had been taken to hospital on Saturday as a precautionary measure to recuperate after surgery last week.

De Lille, a family friend, said:”On behalf of all Capetonians, we wish him a speedy recovery.

She would ask for permission from the Archs wife, Leah Tutu, if she might visit him in hospital.

In a statement issued on behalf of Leah Tutu on Saturday, she said the family “was grateful for the ongoing prayers and support” they had received since his readmission.

The 84-year-old returned to hospital as a “precaution after his surgical wound had shown signs of infection”.

Tutu had the operation 10 days ago.
