Cape Town - Two men drowned after being caught in a rip current at Mnandi beach at the weekend.

National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesman Andrew Ingram said a rescue boat was launched and rescue swimmers responded to the call made by its crew in Strandfontein on Sunday.

City of Cape Town law enforcement officers, Fire and Rescue Services and the police dive unit were also called to the scene.

Sea Rescue Strandfontein station commander Vaughn Seconds said: "A search for the two men who were reported to have disappeared under the water commenced off the Mnandi parking lot. At 5.50pm, the body of one man was found."

Failing light forced the rescue boat to return to the base shortly after the first body was found.

The second body was found by police,

Both bodies have been handed over to the local forensic pathology services.
