Johannesburg - The University of Cape Town is leading the pack of South African universities in an international ranking of the world’s top 400 universities.

The university was ranked 141st, up four places from last year’s 145th spot.

The 2014/15 ranking by QS (Quacquarelli Symonds), a British company specialising in higher education, assessed more than 3 000 universities from around the world and ranked the top 400.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology came out tops, followed by a tie between the University of Cambridge and Imperial College London.

Harvard University came in next, followed by another tie between the University of Oxford and University College London.

The top 400 universities are given individual ranking positions. From there on, the universities are placed within a group, starting from 401-410, up to 701+.

The South African top five are UCT, Wits University (318), Stellenbosch University (390), University of Pretoria (471-480) and the University of KwaZulu-Natal (501-550).
