The carcass of a 14-metre southern right whale has washed up on the rocks at Buffels Bay, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said on Thursday.

“We have informed the department of environment – oceans and coast,” said spokesman Craig Lambinon.

“NSRI Knysna volunteers launched (a) sea rescue craft at the request (of the department) to investigate any possibility of removing the carcass on the seaward side and possibly towing it out to sea.”

The outcome would be known later on Thursday.

Lambinon said it was not known what caused the whale's death. – Sapa
