Cape Town - A governing body member of a Worcester school has been asked to leave after “a physical altercation” with a pupil, during which she allegedly spat in his face.

Western Cape Education Department spokesman Paddy Attwell said the incident happened at Worcester High School on August 22, when the woman supervised the class while the teacher had to attend to an urgent matter.

He said the pupil and his father discussed the matter with the governing body chairman, the member involved and the principal on August 25.

The pupil did not accept the woman’s apology.

“Fellow learners refused to attend classes after discussing the issue with the learner. A group marched to the district office.”

The woman has resigned from the school governing body.

“The school and the department cannot take action against the former school governing body member because she is not employed by the school, nor the department.”

Attwell said the school had organised counselling for the pupil and a district social worker would provide further support, as required.

He said schooling had returned to normal.
