The Cape Town City Council has approved "Cape Town Stadium" as the official name for the city's 2010 World Cup facility.

Councillors yesterday unanimously voted in support of the name.

The panel considered 302 proposals for the new name but in the end Cape Town Stadium beat names like Dome of Storms, Foot of Africa, Saartjie Baartman, Table Top, Motherdrome, Rainbow International Stadium and the South Easter.

The city's 2010 spokesman, Pieter Cronje, said the city recognised the Xhosa and Afrikaans equivalent of Cape Town Stadium.

Cronje said the name was unifying and inclusive of all the city's residents.
