Zuma launches school health scheme

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma launched a school health programme in Pretoria on Thursday as part of the rollout of the National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme.

“Our new school health programmes seeks to correct... (health) challenges and offer a more comprehensive service,” Zuma said in a speech prepared for delivery at the launch.

“We have started this journey together. We must keep our promise of improving the lives of the children of South Africa and to build a successful, healthy and educated nation.”

Tshwane was one of 10 districts in which government is piloting the NHI system.

Zuma said a “few shortcomings” needed to be corrected in order to promote the health of pupils.

These including dealing with children's diets, their mental health, teenage pregnancy and the spread of HIV. - Sapa
