Johannesburg - Motorists participating in the “drive slow” protest against e-tolling were travelling at 20km/h in Braamfontein, Cosatu said on Thursday.

“There's no rush comrades, we have all the time at our disposal,” said Congress of SA Trade Unions provincial secretary Dumisani Dakile.

“We don't need a thousand cars comrades, with the amount of cars we have here we can realise our objectives.”

In Katlehong, motorists were travelling at 10km/h.

There were about 30 cars in the motorcade in downtown Johannesburg and about 30 in the East Rand one.

In both protests, roads nearby were closed to allow the motorcade to proceed through.

Pedestrians were seen waving and fellow motorists hooted in solidarity.

A truck participating in the protest on the East Rand played music via loud speakers.

Police were positioned in front and on the sides of the motorcade.

Before the protest started, a pastor, Paseka Motsoeneng, said there would be chaos in the country if e-tolls went ahead. He said e-tolls would affect the attendance in his church.

Motsoeneng danced with protesters in Katlehong before the protest began.

Last week, Cosatu threatened to occupy Gauteng streets, and block freeways if it did not receive positive feedback on memorandums handed to several departments.

The Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance has brought a court application to have the e-toll project scrapped, but a ruling has yet to be made. - Sapa
