The ANC Youth League will petition the ANC leadership to review the expulsion of Julius Malema, the league's Northern Cape branch said on Wednesday.

“We are not sure when the national ANC Youth League will submit the petition, but it should happen soon,” Northern Cape ANCYL chairman Shadrack Tlhaole said.

“We informed the ANC about the petition (previously), but it said it did not want to engage until the disciplinary process was completed. The African National Congress can now speak on the matter.”

He said the ANCYL must be allowed to engage with the ANC.

“We were waiting to engage and we now have the opportunity. The ANC promised it would listen once the (disciplinary) process was completed,” he said.

“What we are saying as the Northern Cape ANC Youth League is that we can now take this matter up.”

ANCYL national spokeswoman Magdelene Moonsamy declined to confirm if the league would submit a petition to the ANC's national executive committee.

“We are not confirming or commenting on anything at this point.”

On Tuesday, the ANC's national disciplinary committee of appeal (NDCA) announced it had expelled Malema from the party.

Malema was originally suspended, in November last year, for five years for sowing division in the party and for bringing it into disrepute. He was found to have done so by unfavourably comparing the leadership style of President Jacob Zuma to that of former president Thabo Mbeki, and for remarks on bringing about regime change in Botswana.

On February 29, the national disciplinary committee announced the sanction against him was being increased to expulsion. He again appealed and it was this appeal that the NDCA dismissed on Tuesday. – Sapa
