Durban - A local radio personality has come under fire after EFF members in Durban said she had made offensive remarks about their leader on air.

And on Wednesday, about 100 EFF members of wards 26 and 28 picketed outside the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) offices, demanding the Ukhozi FM personality be fired.

Zama Ngcobo, who presents the Vuka Mzansi Breakfast Show, is alleged to have made offensive remarks about EFF leader, Julius Malema.

According to the Daily News’s sister newspaper, The Mercury, Ngcobo allegedly told listeners last week that EFF members in the Eastern Cape were leaving the party and that Malema had used party funds for his wedding and had never done anything for young people.

EFF provincial chairman, Vukani Ndlovu, said: “We want her to choose; either she becomes a politician or presenter, because she cannot do both. She works for SABC and must behave as such.

“She must publicly apologise and resign from the SABC. She just cannot use the SABC to advance her own political agenda.”

While EFF members were protesting outside the building, a few party officials were attending a planned meeting with the management of Ukhozi FM at their offices.

The EFF has reported the matter to the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa (BCCSA).

EFF Ward 26 chairman, Mthandeni Zungu said: “The SABC promised to get back to us about their decision against Ngcobo, as it has been proved that she talked bad about our leader.”

“We are a radical organisation. We are not begging the SABC to fire Ngcobo, but we are telling them. The resolution is on our side. She must be fired from the SABC for good and not even be a tea-lady,” he said.

Ngcobo has been suspended from work after the EFF complaint against her.

SABC spokesman, Kaizer Kganyago, could not be reached for comment. However, He told The Mercury the EFF should follow the right procedures by laying a complaint with the BCCSA.

“Coming to the SABC and marching would not help,” he said.
